The client, a leading healthcare tech company, engineered a high-velocity e-prescription ecosystem designed to modernize the provider-to-pharmacy workflow. This mission-critical solution enables healthcare providers to manage patient data and authorize prescriptions for both controlled and non-controlled substances. The platform’s goal is to digitize the chain of custody, minimizing clinical errors and maximizing operational efficiency through direct electronic transmission.

Key Results Achieved

Validated that the appearance and details on prescription labels were right and followed the rules of each state and pharmacy, making sure that both standalone practices and white-label enterprise installations were 100% compliant.

Verified that the two-way connectivity with Surescripts was reliable, making sure that refill and renewal requests were accurately synced between pharmacies and the e-prescription platform.

Checked that basic prescription functionality and branding settings work the same way across multi-tenant installations, from small clinics to huge hospital systems.

Using JMeter-based performance testing, we found and fixed system-level bottlenecks that were slowing down the prescription process. This made the process go quicker.

Validating the accurate capture of patient details along with critical information like allergies, ensuring that safety alerts trigger correctly during the prescribing process.
Rigorously testing permissions to ensure that only authorized prescribers or nurse practitioners could successfully create and send prescriptions, while strictly blocking unauthorized users.
Verifying that the pharmacy dropdown dynamically showcased only the pharmacies associated with a particular practice, rather than a generic list, which required intricate database logic validation.
Ensuring that the Search and Select Drug functionality was both accurate and efficient against an extensive pharmaceutical database.
Testing the dynamic generation of prescription templates and labels to ensure they adhered strictly to varying state and pharmacy regulatory requirements for appearance and detail.

Operational Challenges

The engagement required rapidly scaling the QA engineering team from 4 to 34 members to support multiple product lines and white-label deployments. The core challenge was onboarding engineers to complex clinical workflows (Surescripts, Label Laws) without slowing down delivery or increasing compliance risk.

We engineered a scalable quality ecosystem that bridged the gap between rapid development and strict healthcare compliance. By deploying a hybrid strategy that combines rigorous manual oversight for nuanced clinical workflows with robust automation for regression testing at scale, we ensured functional stability, high performance, and database integrity across all enterprise deployments.

Our Approach:

We conducted granular testing of the intake module, ensuring that adding patient details, including critical clinical data (e.g., allergies), was accurate and correctly mapped across the entire system.
We validated the dynamic logic for the "Pharmacy Dropdown, " ensuring it correctly displayed only pharmacies strictly associated with a specific practice or location.
Our team rigorously tested the "Search and Select Drug" functionality to ensure speed, accuracy, and seamless retrieval from the medical database.
In compliance with DEA’s EPCS (Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances) regulations, we verified that the system strictly enforced TFA whenever prescribers attempted to issue Schedule II–V controlled medications.
Beyond standard Drug–Drug Interaction (DDI) flags, we validated the decision-support engine for Drug–Dose checks, Drug–Duplicate Therapy checks, and Drug–Disease Contraindication logic, ensuring that all warnings and override workflows were triggered correctly.
We enforced strict security protocols to safeguard patient health information (PHI), ensuring that only authorized Prescribers or Nurse Practitioners could manage prescriptions while maintaining full HIPAA compliance.
A core focus was verifying that prescription templates and labels were generated dynamically in accordance with specific state and pharmacy regulatory requirements, a critical feature for white-label clients.
We managed the critical Surescripts (SS) integration, ensuring prescriptions were delivered to the intended pharmacy and that refill requests were successfully received within the e-prescription platform.
